Announcing a New Sponsor: AMEX Canada

One of the fun things about being a famous traveller (ok, I know I’m not famous, but indulge my ego for a moment please) is that sometimes a company will send me something travel related to test out for them. In a most recent case, the new American Express AIR MILES Platinum Credit Card has been placed on my lap to give a whirl. Along with the card they also gave me 2,500 bonus miles to go along with the 500 miles that you get just for signing up for the card.

American Express Airmiles Platinum Card

I swear I didn’t photoshop my title in there.

Over the next couple months I’m going to be updating my fans (ok,ok, I know… I’m not famous) on my experience with the card. For now, I’m just going to see what I can get with the provided miles.

I am heading home to Canada this December to make sure it’s still cold up there, so I thought it would be a good idea to use the miles to fly across the country. A Flight from Toronto to Calgary is only going to run me about 1,500 miles. Meaning I’ll get the flight from visiting my sister in Toronto to home for free. Good deal right?  However, that leaves me with a dilemma. I have another 1,500 miles to spend. I’ve decided that I want your help to spend them. Heck, if someone comes up with a good enough reason I might even give them to someone in Canada that collects AIR MILES.  Have a look at the AIR MILES Canada website and tell me how you think I should spend the remaining miles? https://www.airmiles.ca/arrow/RewardsHome?selectedCategoryId=cat670016

Beyond the fun I’m going to have using the miles, the credit card appears to be a great way to collect miles for vacations, hotels, or even things like sporting events or concerts. The new card offers a higher earn rate of 1 reward mile for every $10 spent on my everyday spending such asw at gas stations, drugstores and grocery stores. It also offers 1 mile every $10 spent at an AIR MILES sponsor and 1 for every $15 spent anywhere else, a couple months’ worth of spending on the Card could get you a trip across the country.

  1. Very cool! My credit card collects airmiles too, but it’s been a very slow process so far. I think I’m around like 400 miles from years of spending, haha. (I just went to check, but the site’s down!)

I always wonder what cards all of these other travelers are using because theirs all seem to add up so fast! Howwww do they do it???? haha

And since the site’s down, I’m not sure what to suggest.. but if you can use the miles and then pay the difference–you should definitely go somewhere faraway and awesome, rather than just settle on somewhere else in Canada (not that I don’t love our great country :p )

Okay I’m rambling now because I’ve been up writing an essay all night.. I should sleep haha

    • Seattle… your comment made me laugh ahhah. The trick is to buy everything on your cc (flights etc) and then pay it off right away, but find ones, like this one that have a really high $ to earn ratio. Some others play this game where they constantly sign up for different cards and then never use them.
Anther thing about this Amex card that I didn’t mention which is great is that it also includes personal travel insurance.

  2. Hey Brendan, congrats. Sorry to hear of your recent troubles; am ordering your e-book today because I know I’ll learn something. Crossed my mind–and wondered if it crossed yours–have you approached the Canon reps in Canada to help you out with test/review equipment or an out and out donation of equipment? You gave them such an unequivocable endorsement in your last post (saying Canon is all you’ll ever shoot) and the quality of your work makes you a top Canon ambassador imho. I think they should give you a camera to ensure the magic continues as soon as possible:P…
