Barcelona – City of boats, beaches and beats

As a city destination, Barcelona really does boast more than most. On top of the shopping, breath-taking architecture and scenery many European cities provide, Barcelona has all of these and is bountiful when it comes to culture, beaches and nightlife.

It’s for these reasons that when June comes round thousands will be heading to Barcelona in what is likely to become an annual pilgrimage to the city. Last year, the major draw that brought many to Spain’s second largest city was Primavera festival, which saw cult bands like Pulp, The Flaming Lips and PJ Harvey as the sun set on shimmering waters. The experience is one that’s hard to beat.

Alternative music lovers at Primavera Sound can also enjoy the beats of Sonar en Barcelona later in the month.¬†Now in its 19th year, Sonar (June 14th to 16th) is an international festival centred around music – mostly electro – and new media art. This means it has a tendency to attract a slightly older crowd than some other foreign festivals such as Benicassim.¬†Other than the fantastic DJs and bands playing – which this year includes New Order and Maya Jane Coles and Squarepusher – attendance at this festival does not in any way require visitors to ‘slum it’. Forget sweating in tents and bathing with baby wipes; you can choose to book your flights and accommodation with an all-inclusive online provider such as Teletext Holidays, or if your budget is really tight, book a flight and test out one of Barcelona’s many hostels.

Although the jam-packed program should be enough to fill your days and nights while the festival itself is on many would fully recommend spending a few days either side of the festival just taking in the city itself, or recovering by the marina or onBarceloneta beach. If like me you find it almost impossible to decide whether to spend your vacation time at a festival or on a beach holiday, avoid the inner turmoil by doing both in Barcelona this year and make sure you check out some of the city’s incredible museums too. You really will be hard pushed to find a city with more adventures or experience on offer, or a holiday that allows you to cram in so many delights with ease.
