Daily Travel Photo: Train in Motion

Daily Travel Photo: Train in Motion

The Set Up

I took this photo from a train that headed from Curitiba, Brazil to the coast of Southern Brazil. The train ride featured stunning views and the hilarity of watching the local train riders take about 35,000 pictures of anything and everything.

The Shot

This trip was a photographer’s dream and nightmare all wrapped into one. The vintage train, beautiful scenery and ruined buildings along the tracks were very photogenic. The problem was the moving train and low levels of light under cloud cover made it very difficult for a clean capture. But when the world gives you lemons, make lemonade. In this case I used the motion to my advantage to make the train look like we were flying through the rainforest at break neck pace.

I shot this photo at 18mm, with an f of 7.1 and a shutter speed of 1/6, Iso100.

What’s next

On Friday I have a new article coming describing this amazing trip to the coast where I took the train, hiked the rain forest, and finally caught a speed boat to Ihla do Mel. Stay tuned for that, I think you’ll enjoy it.

haha… do what on photoshop??? This was all done in camera. Low shutter speed focus on the head of the train which is moving at the same speed as you, and thus your camera, then fire. The slow shutter speed creates the blurred motion movement of the train. The only thing I did in post production to this photo was add a little contrast in the RAW file.
