Malta is the type of place that always invites a smile. Whether it’s the cafe culture of ancient capital Valletta, the golden sands of Mellieha Bay or the glorious lagoons of the island’s coast, holidays in Malta will always leave you with plenty of fond memories.
For families, there are a number of well-equipped resorts with great family hotels and apartments. Many hotels offer kids’ clubs to keep the little ones entertained, offering all sorts of activities from pools and slides to sports lessons and arts and crafts. While most of Malta’s coastline is rocky or made up of shingle, there are several sandy beaches that make for a perfect day by the sea. Head to Mellieha Bay for a glorious retreat, or hop on a ferry to the lovely little island of Comino.
Cast out into the shimmering shores between Malta and Gozo, Comino is a miniature island spanning just 3.5 square kilometres. What it lacks in size, it certainly makes up for in ‘wow’ factor. It’s a paradise for snorkellers, divers, watersports enthusiasts and ramblers; it’s car-free, virtually uninhabited and it makes for a glorious sun-drenched escape. The Blue Lagoon is the star of the show – it’s a beautiful inlet of shallow waters which offers lovely bath-warm waters that’s perfect for bathing or splashing around with the little ones. Bring your walking shoes and set off for a short but picturesque tour of this tiny island, and remember to take your camera!
The island of Gozo is another popular spot. Known for its rural beauty and rolling hills, Gozo is a real looker and it’s got plenty in the way of cultural sites of interest too. It’s home to the Ġgantija temples which are said to be among the world’s oldest free-standing structures, along with Malta’s Megalithic Temples. Gozo is also peppered with churches and basilicas. And for those who prefer sea-based adventures, Gozo is considered an excellent dive site and a prime spot for watersports.
All things considered, Malta and its islands are a great choice for holidaymakers from all walks of life. From extended stays to last minute getaways, after a holiday in Malta you’re bound to come home with plenty of happy holiday memories.
