Hostel Review: Freddie Next to the Mercury, Bratislava

During my stay in Bratislava, I stayed at the very pleasant Freddie Next to the Mercury Hostel and Apartments. The property, which is located just 5 minutes on foot to the train station, is very well design, well staffed, and extremely good value. Here is my review.

Hostel Bratislava

Location

The location of the hostel is decent, but not exactly ideal either. It is very close to the train station so it is a good option if you’re dragging a bunch of luggage around with you. The downside is that it’s a fair distance from the old town and the castle. It is, however, definitely within walking distance. It will take you about 15 minutes to walk to the old town square or 25 minutes up to the castle. The upside to the location is that the building which is tall enough to offer nice views of the city. There are a couple restaurants nearby, but not many.

Rooms

The rooms are the exceling point of the hostel. Not only are all rooms comfortable and clean, but they are also very well designed. The rooms have lots of ambient light and plenty of plugins. I stayed in one of the apartments that came fit with a little kitchen and a balcony as well, it was a great space.  The views, too, were pretty legit.

Facilities

The facilities of hostel are really good though you can see that it’s still a bit of a work in progress. There is quick WiFi internet throughout the property, including in the rooms. There are a couple really good common areas in the hostel including a deck area which seems perfect for a summer barbeque. There is also another common area in the basement fit with a potential bar and DJ booth. There are also kitchen facilities on property for guest staying in the dorms or rooms without kitchens.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere is good, although the fact that it was the low season during my visit made it fell like I was all alone. I’m sure that during the busier times of year it’s easier to meet people. The staff is helpful too, however there were a couple cases there was no one at the desk and we had to wait outside the entrance. Again, i think that was largely due to the fact that it was the low season so there wasn’t as much staff on duty.

  1. Looks nice. I’m likely to be going through Bratislava a couple of times next year (working in Austria and being flown into Bratislava rather than Vienna because the company I work for is cheap and Bratislava has Ryanair flights), so it’s good to know of a nice place to stay. When I was last in the city, I didn’t find the distances a problem at all; it’s so small, you really can walk everywhere!
