Hostel Review: Victorian House Hotel – Glasgow

Well, this one didn’t start out so well.  I was originally meant to be staying at a guesthouse called Charing Cross Guesthouse, but when I turned up at the door they didn’t have my booking on record.  After a couple minutes of going through the paper bookkeeping I got in contact with the boss who asked me to move over to another hotel because this one was booked up.  First impressions have a way, and this one wasn’t good.  If I can offer them any advice it would be to switch to an electronic filing system, especially if you’re going to be taking bookings from websites like HostelBookers.com.

However, I was glad to be moved because the hotel I moved to seemed much more attractive than the Charing Cross.  The Victorian House was cozy property with simple, yet comfortably, rooms at a fairly decent rate.  If you’re a couple looking to get out of the hostels, or a solo traveller looking for a nice place that wont break your budget this is a good option.  I can’t, however, recommend the Charing Cross because I didn’t see any of the rooms.

The Rooms

I stayed in a private room up at the top of the building.  The room was quite small and made use of shared bathroom facilities rather than being an ensuite although ensuites are also available there.  There was a sink in the room which is always nice in a non-ensuite hotel room.  There was also TV in the room, although I never turned it on.

The price of a single room like I was in is about 40 pounds ($61). a double is about 65 pounds (93$).  So you obviously get much better value as a couple or a pair.

Score: 70

Facilities

  • Internet: There is WiFi in the building although where I was way up at the top it is slow and faint.
  • Breakfast: Included breakfast is quite simple, but it is good and included in the price.
  • Kitchen: Since it is a hotel there is no kitchen available
Score: 70

Location

I love the location of the hotel because it’s right in the middle of things without being on a busy street.  From the hotel you are a block from a popular shopping/eating street, and then you are right between Westend and the Cathedral district meaning you’ll never really have to walk too far.

Staff

I’m not going to give the staff at Victorian House a knock because of the “miscommunication” with my booking at Charing Cross.  The staff is really friendly and helpful.  They were spot on.

Score: 100

Overall Score

I would definitely stay there again if I was looking for this kind of property.  The staff was friendly, the showers were warm and the location was great.  My only minor issue was the internet quality.

Overall Score: 85
