French Guiana Travel Guides

French Guiana sits well off the usual South American traveller’s radar.  This French speaking country nestled into the northeast corner of South America, bordering Brazil and Suriname, is famous for being one of the most expensive travel destinations in the western hemisphere and not famous for a whole lot else.  The capital of Cayenne is a cultural montage including French and Asian immigrants, decedents of African slaves brought to the region, as well as a growing population of Brazilians coming to the region in search of higher wages.  Those who have the time to explore into the interior will find a completely different country than exists in somewhat superficial Cayenne. In general, travel experiences in French Guiana are limited, but, as is the case with anywhere in the world, the experience is what you make of it.

  1. Too Cool! This has to be one of the few guides I’ve seen on FG. You have the market cornered!

  2. I have to admit even having backpacked across a decent section of South America that I don’t know a lot about this country. I’ve actually yet to encounter another backpacker mention they’ve been to here. Did you go? I think the most off the radar place I’ve ever visited was Bangladesh and I ended up loving it. I’d love to hear a first hand experience from somebody who has been to French Guiana.

    • @Samuel – Yep I’ve been to all the Guianas (french guiana, Suriname and Guyana). They were great, I especially loved guyana and suriname. If you search the blog you can find articles on it all!
