Travelling the US on the Cheap

America is famous for being one of the most difficult places in the world to travel on a budget. There are issues with just about every part of saving. The distance between places is so huge that you often have to splurge a bit for your transport from point A to point B. On top of that, accommodation isn’t exactly cheap. However, luckily for you there are ways around a lot of the costs.

1. Look for Flight Deals

In America, the flights are actually surprisingly cheap as long as you book well in advance.  Also, if you book multiple legs at once you tend to get a deal.  Moreover, lots of airlines give really good online specials if you’re paying attention. Southwest Airlines especially is famous for having great deals if you’re willing to dig. You can find a relevant Southwest Airlines Promo Code online and save a good amount of money in the process. A little digging and planning when it comes to your flight goes a long way.

2. Stay at Hostels

Not only will hostels save you money on your bed at night, but the availability of a kitchen will mean you spend less on food as well.  The other benefit is that you might also run into other people travelling in the same direction as you.  You might be able to hitch a lift with them.  They’ll also be a good source of information as people travelling on similar budgets are great resources.  Staying in hostels will save you a lot of money in America, but there are lots of other benefits as well.

3. Coupons

I know most of us kind of laugh at the thought of using coupons for everything, but the truth is that they can get you really great value. In fact, in America most companies use coupons as free advertising because they don’t think people will use them.  You get online coupon codes for just about any place as well in case you wanted to buy something online.  If you’re really looking to save money, then you’ll want to suck up your pride and use coupons in America as much as you can.

4. Hitchhiking

It’s much more rare to hitchhike in America than you might expect.  However, there are quite a few people that do it, and it can save you a lot of money.  Pitch in by giving the driver a couple bucks for fuel or buy them lunch and more often than not they’ll be more than happy to give you a lift.  One of the best hitchhiking tips for America is to go to truck stops where truckers are heading to your destination anyways and will likely give you a lift for a little bit of company.
