As a permanent traveller, I constantly hear people saying how they would love to leave everything behind and travel. However, few people actually make the jump. While some people simply can’t, there are so many people that just make excuses as to why they aren’t doing what they want to do. Leaving everything behind to travel the world is something that’s easier to do than you might imagine. Nothing is holding you back from doing it but yourself and your fears. Here is my advice as to how to do it.

Decide if this is what you Really Want

It’s easy to feel like travel is something that you want to do long-term. Few people have negative opinions about travel. However, travelling long-term isn’t for everyone. Before you ever move forward in the planning stage of this process you need to decide if this is what you really want, because once you make the next step there is no turning back.

Stop Making Excuses

Once you come to the conclusion that travel is what you really want there should be no further discussion. If you want it, there should be nothing that holds you back from doing it. Jobs, friends, finances are all simple excuses to stop you from taking the leap towards travel. Hell, even if you have a family you can always take them along with you. There are plenty of family travellers out there, and if this is what you truly want and need, they will support you.

Sell Everything

For most people, this is the toughest step because it feels like there is no going back. However, I think that you’ll find that when you complete this step you’ll feel completely liberated from your need for possessions. You’ll realize how much money you’ve wasted on things you hardly use. Besides, you’ll feel grateful for the boost in savings from selling all your excess. If you’re Canadian like me, a good place to get rid of all this stuff is the classifieds site Keep the few things that are sentimental to you and sell everything else!

Bucket List Planning

The beauty of travelling now is that you don’t have to wait until you’re dying to check things off your bucket list. When you’re preparing to set off in travel choose 5-10 of the things you want to do and see more than anything and set up your trip around those things. If you want to trek to Machu Picchu, make sure it’s on your list. If you want to get up close and personal with African Elephants make sure you plan to do that. Your bucket list will grow as you travel, but imagining that you’re only a couple months away from making your dreams come true is a powerful tool.

Create an Element of No Return

This was kind of done in the step of selling everying, but should be taken further. Once you’ve sold everything, you need to close the door on the thought that you can change your mind. One really good way of doing this is by booking a round the world ticket with a final destination other than home. This will force you to set in stone the idea that you’ll be travelling over the next bit of your life.

Dive in

There’s nothing else you can do at this point but jump in head first. The first steps are tough, but you’ll be blown away how easy it becomes. You’ll likely wonder why it took you so long to make the leap to travel. Don’t forget to drink it all in!
