Benin is the birthplace of voodoo and also the home to what was one of the bloodiest African empires of the colonial era. Moreover, Benin was one of the most productive outposts for slave trading in the region. For history and culture lovers, this is perhaps the most underrated travel destination in all of Africa. If history doesn’t get you going, you’ll also find a little bit of Rasta life in Grand Popo, Cosmopolitan life in Cotonou, and wildlife up north in Benin’s section of Park de W. Thus far, if I could name one country I wish I could explore a little bit more of in Africa, I’d tell you Benin.
Time Needed: 2-3 Weeks
Backpacker’s Budget: $30-45; more if you do a safari.
Highlights: Abomey, Cotonou, and Park de W.
