Online Photography Workshops

With much of the world unable to travel – even before the 2020 global situation – online photography courses and workshops are a great opportunity to learn, no matter where you are.  I’m extremely excited to start offering ways to not only learn photography online, but connect as a community.

My online photography workshops have the goal of bringing the photography community together.  I want us to not only get better at the trade, but find friends within the industry. I want to teach you, but I also want to help you all learn from each other.

Once a month, I’m going to be offering seminars, workshops, critiques, and masterminds via Zoom.  These sessions will be interactive and feature content that’s just too long for YouTube.  If these classes become popular, we might add a couple extra per month.

Photography Seminars

Online photography seminars will be led by Brendan van Son, and occasionally guest lecturers.  These will be more lecture style and have a focus on a big picture idea or story.  Lecture topics might include: “How I Got Started in Travel Photography”, “How I Make Money”, etc.

Rather than an interactive platform, these will be more about the lecturer telling their story.  However, there will be Q&A time at the end of the session.

How to Join?

This month’s seminars is “How I Succeeded/Failed at Building a YouTube Channel“.  It will take place on October 11th.

  1. Those with an “iphonography” (or higher) membership to Brendan’s YouTube channel will get free access.  They’ll also have access to the recorded session later on if they miss it, or just want to review.
  2. When seminars are announced, you will be able to sign up via Eventbrite.  The price per seminar is €5
    • The next seminar is September 20th.  It’s called “How I Accidentally Became a Travel Photographer”.
    • Sign up here.

Photography Workshops

The goal of the photography workshops will be to learn a specific skill.  These workshops will also be limited to a much smaller group size.  The max group size will usually be 50. But, that will vary depending on the topic.

Some examples on topics might be, “Getting to Know your Camera”, “Lightroom Basics”, “Advanced Lightroom”, etc.

These will always be led by Brendan van Son, but there’s a chance that guests will come on to teach some more advanced techniques.

The workshops will be interactive with participants encouraged to jump in with questions.  Most workshops will last between 60-90 minutes.

Photo Critiques

One of the most important things to my growth as a photographer as being critiqued.  In fact, on of the ongoing things that has helped me continue to grow as a photographer is critiquing.

The art of the photo critique is such a powerful tool to learning.  When we take images, we have an emotional attachment to them.  Having someone else give constructive criticism to their photo allows them to see the problems that they’ve been blinded to by their attachment to the photo making process.

Moreover, critique other photos helps you understand what makes for a better photo.

In the online photo critiques, we’ll take small groups of 6-10 people and critique 1 or 2 of their images.  These critiques will be totally interactive and participants are encouraged to join in the critiques.

How to Join?

This critique will take place October 4th, 2020.  There are two ways to join:

  1. Those with a “Full Frame” (or higher) membership to Brendan’s YouTube channel will have the opportunity to participate. Anyone an “APSC”  (or higher) membership will have access to the critiques online afterwards.
  2. When seminars are announced, you will be able to sign up via Eventbrite.  The price per seminar is €50
    • The first photo critique will take place October 4th.

Masterminds

If you’ve never been a part of a mastermind, it’s kind of hard to explain the value.  But, I’ll try.

Essentially, a mastermind is when a group of 6-10 people get together and talk about their plans for life, business, or whatever.  In a photography mastermind, the people that are involved will each have the chance to bring up their plans or ideas to the group.  The group then, has the chance to give advice, constructive criticism, or add some of their own ideas.  It’s an incredible way to build inspiration, get advice from a diverse group of people, or to gain opinions to the viability of your plans.

The way our masterminds will work is simple.  We’ll set aside 90-120 minutes for a maximum 8 participants.  Brendan van Son will lead the discussion and moderate.  Each member will have time allotted to talk about their plans.  If a participant doesn’t have anything they want to discuss, but still wants to be involved in the overall discussion, that’s fine too.

Masterminds are a phenomenal way to run through ideas and build some inspiration.  They’re also a really good way to make friends in the photography community.

How to Join?

This month’s mastermind (October 25th, 2020) will focus on taking your photography business to the next level. There are two ways to join:

  1. Those with a “Full Frame” (or higher) membership to Brendan’s YouTube channel will have the opportunity to participate.
  2. When seminars are announced, you will be able to sign up via Eventbrite.  The price per seminar is €50
